The will of the Lord be done!

Scripture reading for February 21st: Acts 21, Psalm 37, Proverbs 6

Acts 21: 10-14 “While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'” When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the Name of the Lord Jesus.” And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.””

Paul was traveling with companions and heading for Jerusalem. At yet another stop in Caesarea, the prophet Agabus gave Paul and the church there about the coming arrest and binding of Paul. Those present, and Luke, urged Paul not to go. It is natural to want to avoid trials, but in this case Paul had been instructed to go to Jerusalem. He must obey even though he might have wanted to stay. Finishing God’s work must come first, even if it resulted in imprisonment or even death. Paul was choosing to ‘delight himself’ in the Lord and trusted that he was given the desires of God’s heart. He was lead by the Holy Spirit to fulfil God’s will.

Psalm 37:4-5 “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.”

Prayer: Father God, help me to delight myself in You each day and open my heart to Your will and desires. I sometimes would rather follow the easy path that my flesh or even my wife or family think best. Help me to encourage others wrestling with God’s will to follow Him obediently and with faith. I hide Your Word in my heart that I might be lead by it, instructed in the night hours and spoken to in decision time.

Proverbs 6:20-22 “My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.”
