Jesus Does All Things Well
Scripture reading for November 6: Mark 7:32-37 “And the brought to Him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged Him to lay His hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, He sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell know one. But the more He charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.””
Today we read Mark’s record of Jesus healing a man who was deaf and mute. A group of his friends brought the man to Jesus and begged Him to lay His hand on him. But Jesus took the man aside and ministered to him in private. He put His fingers in the man’s ears and then spit on them and touched the man’s tongue. In an act of obedience to His Father, He spoke to the ears and tongue a simple word, “Be opened!” At the Word of Jesus, this man was set free and began to speak freely and could hear plainly. This miracle brought joy and rejoicing to the amazed people. They began zealously sharing about the miracle and Jesus Who had performed it.
But Jesus charged them to tell no one. Although this man could now hear and speak, he didn’t keep quiet and neither did his friends. The more Jesus implored them to keep quiet, the more they shared their joy! They told everyone that Jesus did all things well! They told about Jesus healing the deaf and mute man, demonstrating God’s mercy for hurting people. When we have a personal encounter with Jesus and He reveals the Father’s love, even the deaf hear and the mute share the ‘Good News!’
We can all respond to this story as our faith directs us. We can be a friend to someone who is hurting, deaf, or mute and bring them to Jesus in prayer. We can take the authority Jesus gave His disciples and the instructions of God’s Word and anoint with oil and lay hands on the one in need. (James 5:13-16) We can rejoice in faith that Jesus does all things well!
