Living water!
Scripture reading for November 1st: John 6-8
Thirst is a great motivator! When we were farming in Iowa, during the hot summers we had some jobs that made us very thirsty. Picking up hay bales on a humid afternoon with no breeze really worked up a thirst. Staking bales in the barn was a hot job! We also cut sunflowers out of the soybean fields with a machete working up a good thirst!
“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” “By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:39-39
On this last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, the custom was to get two large jars of water from the pool of Siloam and pour it out as an offering before the Lord. It was probably at this time that Jesus stood up and spoke to the crowd. He invited those that were spiritually thirsty to come to Him. He promised that if they would drink of His life, a life-giving stream of “living water” would flow from within them. John interprets this prophetic word of Jesus as referring to the Holy Spirit being poured out after Jesus’ ascension. The Holy Spirit would be a life-giving spring that would bring rivers of refreshing and life to those who would believe on Jesus and receive the Father’s blessing!
Are you “thirsty” from your hard work and labors in this sin-filled world? Jesus calls for us to come to Him for the relief we need. He was glorified as He ascended into heaven and was seated at God’s right hand. He poured out the Spirit on the day of Pentecost! He alone is the source of this spring of special “living water”. This water is obtained by faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God! Living Water: there’s no other drink quite like it!
Streams of living water!
Scripture reading for October 31st: John 6-8
Thirst is a great motivator! When we farmed in Iowa during the hot summers, picking up hay bales on a humid afternoon worked up a thirst to get to the jug of cool water! Cutting sunflowers out of the soybean fields with a machete also made us thirsty. We had one farm with half-mile rows meaning it would be a mile up and back. In the hot summer sun, I would be thirsty before I got to the far end of the field. It was a good motivator for the whole crew to work faster and make it back!
“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living waster will flow from within him.” “By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:39-39

The Father’s Will
Scripture reading for November 2nd: John 6-8
After the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, Jesus drew a great number of followers. They followed Him across the lake, and Jesus confronted them with their true motive: they had eaten the bread and been filled. (John 6:26) He warned them not to work for bread that spoils, but to seek the food that endures to eternal life, which only He could give them. The miracle was a sign that God the Father had placed His approval on Jesus the Son. This prompted them to ask Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” (John 6:28-29)
Jesus spent a great deal of time telling His followers about the Father. Jesus was the Son of God the Father, and knew Him well. Part of Jesus mission was to reveal the Father to those made in His image. The miracle of the bread and fish had impressed these followers and brought them the remembrance of the story of Moses and how bread was provided in the desert wilderness. Jesus pointed out that it was not Moses who gave them bread, but His Father who gives the True Bread. Jesus Christ, Himself, was this true bread that came out of heaven from the Father. The True Bread gives life to the world. These followers had a hard time grasping what Jesus was saying and asked for some of this bread again. “Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty.”” (John 6:35)
Jesus declared to them His Father’s will, “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all that He has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:39-40) Our Father is merciful and draws all men to salvation through His Son. He has provided true Bread and an eternal thirst quencher! All we must do is believe on the One He has sent! It is so simple, yet so profound! Are you doing the work that provides the Bread of Life?
