“Your Faith Has Made You Well”
Scripture reading for October 22: Matthew 9:18-22 “While He was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” And Jesus rose and followed him, with His disciples. And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment, for she said to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will be made well.” And instantly the woman was made well.”
Matthew 9:23-25 “And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, He said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at Him. But when the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.”
Today’s story tells of a ruler of the Jews whose daughter had died. This man went immediately to Jesus and appealed for His help, expressing a trust that Jesus could lay His hand on her and she would live. As Jesus went with this man to help revive his deceased daughter, another woman was moving by faith towards Jesus. She had an issue of blood for twelve years. She believed that all she needed was to touch Jesus’ garment and somehow she would be healed. As she pressed through and touched His garment, healing flowed from Jesus and instantly she was made well.
Picking up the story after the interruption, Jesus came to the ruler’s home and was greeted by mourners crying out and playing funeral music. He told them to stop because the girl was only sleeping. They laughed at Jesus, thinking Him to be a madman or a fool who did not comprehend reality. He had them all removed and He took the girl by her hand and she arose to the amazement of all. Jesus always rewards faith. The just live by their faith. We are healed by faith. We live eternally by faith.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for revealing the amazing power of believing in Jesus and His ability to heal, save, and even give life to the dead! “I shall not die, but I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:17) Amen!
