Jesus shows compassion!

Scripture reading for April 25th: Matthew 14, Psalm 82, Proverbs 20

Matthew 14: 13-16 “Now when Jesus heard this, He withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed Him on foot from the towns. When He went ashore He saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.””

God the Father’s heart of compassion was on full display through His Son Jesus. Jesus had just been told of His cousin John the Baptist’s death at the hands of Herod. He withdrew to a lonely place for solitude, but crowds of people ran to where He was going. They had great need of healing and encouragement because they all lived under the cruel reign of Herod. Jesus took time to be with them and minister to them. When the day was nearly gone, the disciples suggested that Jesus send them away for food. Jesus had other plans that put the burden of their need for food in His disciples hands. Taking the little that they came up with, Jesus blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples to distribute. A miracle of compassion flowed through His disciples as they gave out the bread and fish. God’s heart was revealed!

Psalm 82:3-4 “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for Your heart of compassion for the hurting, the sick, the needy and the poor, including orphans and widows. Challenge me and Your followers to show compassion by praying for the sick and hurting, feeding the hungry, and giving Good News to those in despair and darkness. Uphold Your Glorious Throne through acts of covenant love flowing through Your servants.

Proverbs 20:23 “Steadfast love and faithfulness reserve the king, and by steadfast love his throne is upheld.”

Zeal for Father’s house!

Scripture reading for October 25th: Ezekiel 4-6, Psalm 82, John 2

John 2: 13-17 “The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple He found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And He told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make My Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.””

Jesus Christ came to show the heart of His Father to lost mankind. He healed, cast out devils, and taught the Gospel of the Kingdom of heaven. But as Jesus visited the temple, early in His ministry (and again towards the end), He found money-changers, greed, idolatry, and worldly trading. His holy anger caused Jesus to drive out those who were buying and selling. These worldly Jews were hindering God’s purposes for the temple. It was to be a house of prayer for all people and not a house of trade and money grabbing. The Father’s heart of passion for the needy, the broken, and the nations was to show compassion and mercy and the Father’s love. Jesus would demonstrate that in His passionate death.

Psalm 82:3-4 “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for sending Jesus Christ to Your temple on earth to show all Your love and compassion as well as Your holy anger against those who would hinder the poor and needy from coming to you. Forgive me for failing to be a house of prayer for all people and nations. Remove any hinderance in my life that may keep others from coming to Jesus Christ and finding help for their need of a Savior.

Ezekiel 6:13-14 “And you shall know that I am the Lord, when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, under every green tree, and under every leafy oak, wherever they offered pleasing aroma to all their idols. And I will stretch out My hand against them and make the land desolate and waste, in all their dwelling places, from the wilderness to Riblah. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Ask and receive!

Scripture reading for April 24th:  John 14, Psalm 82, Proverbs 20

Key Scriptures: John 14:11-13 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.  Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.  Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask Me anything in My Name, I will do it.”

Jesus made some fantastic promises to those who would choose to believe in Him.  He promised His disciples that they would do the same works that He had been doing.  He also stated that they would do greater works.  In fact, whatever need that they had, they could ask in His Name and He would do it.  Faith to see what Jesus wanted to do and to ask Him would bring results!

Faith Confession:  Thank You Jesus for these precious and magnificent promises.  Help me to see what You want to do each day and to ask You for needed resources. (Action step:  Ask Jesus in prayer for a need that you have and expect results.)

Psalm 82:3-4  Father, I pray Your Word:  “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.  Rescue the weak and the needy, deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”  Amen.
