Keys to abiding now and forever

Scripture reading for November 23rd: 1st John 2

Key Scriptures: 1st John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

John had walked with Jesus as possibly the youngest disciple. He was the only one not to die a martyr’s death and lived into his ninety’s. He was the bishop or overseer of the churches in Asia. He spoke plainly to the church to help them live a victorious life of faith and to enjoy God’s presence forever. In this letter, John gives some clear advice concerning the world system of the antichrist that was present even as John wrote his letter. First, believers are not of this world system anymore. They have been born again from above. They cannot love the world system and live in the flesh and follow its desires and please God the Father. Our Father gives good gifts and calls His children to holiness and consecration to prepare them for life with Him forever. Some in the church had departed to follow the flesh and antichrist spirits. This a sign of the last hour.

1st John 2:18-19 “Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.”

Faith confession and prayer: Father, I choose to love You and to turn away from the world system. I belong to You and long for the kingdom of heaven and Your will on earth as in heaven. Give me and Your church discernment of spirits that we might avoid the antichrist spirit that is present now in this last hour. Help me to be watchful over those in the church that the world, flesh and satanic antichrist spirit might not snare any who believe.

1st John 2:26-27 “I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie–just as it has taught you, abide in Him.”

An anointing from the Holy One!

Scripture reading for November 20th:  1st John 2

John identified the false teachers of his day as ‘antichrists’.   An ‘antichrist’ was one who set their own teaching over and against what Christ taught.  In other words, Jesus proclaimed that He was the “Son of God”.  The antichrists would deny the deity of Jesus, also denying God the Father or our adoption into the Father’s family.  They claimed to be Christ-followers but were counterfeits!

“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.  This is how we know it is the last hour.  They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us.”  (1st John 2:18-19)  John taught the church that the appearance of these false teachers marked the time they were living in as the ‘last days’.  These teachers came from within the church but were not really part of the true church.  We must now be in the last minutes or seconds because these same types of teachers abound in our world today.

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.  . . I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.  As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in Him.”  (1st John 2:20, 26-27)  God our Father has equipped us with the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of Truth that lives in each believer to reveal truth and give discernment of false spirits.  We must remain in Jesus Christ and follow the Spirit and Word to avoid deception!

Beware of Antichrist!

Scripture reading for December 2nd: 1st John 2:18-3:6

The term ‘antichrist’ brings up images of the beast of Revelation.  This term ‘beast’ may bring up ideas of grotesque combinations of animal and human characteristics that are totally evil and bring fear to all men.  But the term as used by John here refers to someone who set himself up as a replacement or counterfeit for Christ.  This person may actually appear as a possible ‘Christ’.   That’s why John spends time warning his church members to be on their guard and stay under the anointing of the Holy Spirit!

“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.  This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us.  for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us, but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.” (1st John 2:18-19)  John explains that the time they lived in was considered the ‘last days.’   There was an understanding that Jesus could return at any time and that before He appeared, the Antichrist would come.

Many false teachers were among the people of God in John’s day.  Many of them denied Jesus was the Christ.  They left fellowship with those in the church and took away those who would believe their false doctrines.  John taught that this separation came because they were really not part of Christ’s true body. He warned the church to stick to the truth and not believe their lies!  (1st John 2:20-25)

“I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.  As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in Him.” (1st John 2:26-27)

We have need to listen closely to John’s warning today.  Many false teachers have gone out from the true church and taken many with them.  Millions are in deception because they really do not know Him and have the anointing of the Holy Spirit in their lives.  Jesus Christ is coming soon, will you be confident and unashamed before Him?
